History of Michaelson Symposium
One year after the death of Professor MICHAELSON in 1982, his disciples, colleagues and friends over the world decided to initiate a commemorative event as a tribute to his unmatched worldwide contributions to Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Sciences. It was decided that the most adequate commemorative undertaking would be:
1. Awarding a “Michaelson Medal” bearing his portrait 2. Organizing a scientific meeting to be called the Michaelson Symposium with the main theme being “Ocular Angiogenesis”
The Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities, of which Prof. MICHAELSON was a member, the Jerusalem Hebrew University Medical School and the Hadassah Hospital agreed to sponsor the Medal and an International Nominating Committee was elected. In consultation with Professor ARNALL PATZ (then the Director of the Wilmer Eye Institute) and Professor STEPHEN RYAN (former Dean of the Medical School and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Doheny, University of South California), it was decided to hold the first Symposium in Jerusalem.
